the country and so these individuals have come through a program that is led by faculty that are world renowned and

you know they look all nice up there like they're nice and friendly but they're also tough and it's this is not an

easy program to get through and when I think about what it's like to be an Earth and Space scientists

do all the hard work that physics and chemistry does and you know kind of all these going hard science and then

you've got to go out in the field and you've got it so go into the lab and you have to have all of that

foundational science and math makes sense in a very messy real world where there's complexity and contingency and it's as

a one day achieve is really quite remarkable in terms of not just mastering serve analytic techniques but really deep

critical thinking communication skills etcetera and so when you are sort of you know taking them out to celebrate them to

that we need we have trained students and students have learned are graduates of learn how to function

in an environment where you don't know all the data you don't know all the answers

other words in the face of this complexity

because that is one of the most challenging jobs and one of the jobs it's most needed by our society

sure as a profession in any of your jobs when you interact with your colleagues with your neighborhood with your

society you can bring to bear your understanding of earth processes your analytical abilities abilities you can be

an agent of rational thought from number one phrase remember that you can be an agent of rational thought

an example comes to mind it's called politics

the fact of the way our society works is that politicians the people we elect the side on policy and law is not the scientist and

that's as it should be that's the way democracy should work but in a politically polarized society such as we live in now

a lot of politicians and policy makers who decide what they want to do first and then they either

misuse or ignore the science altogether

when you see that it is your duty to raise your hand and protest is your duty to do the analysis

that the politicians and the policy makers may be skipping over for a whole host of reasons

nature does not follow any political doctrine if we ignore nature and how we live on

this planet we do so at our peril nature will eventually reassert itself

nature will rise up and bite us in our metaphorical behind if we do not pay attention

I was taken aback by that to the point where I didn't have a good response I sort of blundered through it

because what I want to emphasize is that there is a pure joy that comes from understanding how

the knowledge you have thought of many times is when you listen to a concerto or symphony or look at a painting just

cascades we see beautiful mountains but if for that concern or that painting you understand and analyze how the

melody ships how the melody Morris how the painting is embedded in a deep cultural context it means so much more it's

much more beautiful the same way when we look at the cascades and we don't see mountains we see volcanoes and we

understand how volcanoes grow from processes deep deep in the earth and then how that you wrote and degrade once they

form and how the rivers and interaction with the atmosphere works it's a beautiful system so

so I was thinking back on my days at Exxon as I prepared these remarks and I was trying to remember some experiences that were

particularly formative for me in my early years as I was starting out and about your age that maybe you could learn from and the one

I immediately remembered was a kind of a horrifying thing actually that happened in my first year working in the company

Houston I actually have an exact date for this recollection it was 3/24/1989

about 6 months after I

started my career in Houston

when I came to work Saturday there was this odd feeling in the air nobody was working they were

standing around the coffee machines talking about some big event that happened overnight

the event took place in prince William sound in Alaska

and it took some and although it took some time for the complete picture to emerge it soon

became clear that what occurred was the largest ever oil spill in US waters when a tanker

named the Exxon Valdez ran aground on a reef while the captain was asleep in his bunk

after reportedly doing some heavy drinking

I actually knew right where this area was because my office mate you dub

was a PhD student of Daryl's doing his PhD work in that same area

now one of the things that happens during a company crisis is that they organize a big meetings to tell everyone what was going on

they realize that the employees can be really good ambassadors for the company

and they also didn't want us all to get too distracted and stop working

so we had a few of these meetings over the next few weeks they would pass along information

that we might not get on the news it wasn't delivered in kind of a clinical way

you know kind of an upbeat way that didn't portray the company too harshly and I used to call them feel good meetings

because we were all supposed to calmly go about our work after hearing these devastating news reports

my most vivid memory from that episode is riding down an elevator with a bunch of people after one of these meetings

there were 2 sets of people on the elevator

young people like myself who are thinking what the heck did we just do up there

it's an unbelievable disaster it's a colossal environmental screw up

and then there was a group of older guys and I can talk about older guys now because I'm an older guy now

these older guys mostly guys were saying things on the elevator like that's no big deal it's just a bunch of dead ducks

I have to tell you you could cut the tension on that in that elevator with a knife

it was so thick the young people kept quiet but we're totally outraged

in the older people were only thinking about what it was going to do to the price of the stock

now in one of the great coincidences of my life

it turns out that one of the 7 engineers

a small team who wrote the original at that time still current

prince William sound oil spill contingency plan was my father in law

so naturally I ended up having spending a lot of time on the phone with him over the next few weeks asking what

happened asking why it hadn't been contained or mediated more quickly trying to understand who screwed up at center

I remember beginning to question myself for taking this job

and I told him on more than one occasion and said Jim I think I need to quit this company

but he brought me in off the ledge

and after some weeks and months went by my little world returned to

normal and I went on to continue working there for another 26 years

even to this day I think about myself doubts back then so if you find yourself having self

doubts in this period of your career you've got a lot of company don't worry about it

think about how close I came to quitting and how different my career would have been and how different my family's life would

so I guess one thing they'll Elsa taught me was not to make quick decisions into

slip sometimes let things play out before taking any drastic actions

put on a broader level what those early years in the industry taught me

was that all these organizations and not just oil companies

all these organizations are made out of people

and the strengths and weaknesses of the organizations are completely dependent on the character the honesty and integrity

of the employees of those organizations

yeah I can tell you if it's an organization bigger than about 10 people

there will be people with very different backgrounds and very different world views and you you will work with people who are

friendly people as well as very difficult people you will work with conservative people as well as liberal people you will

work with people who are only looking out for themselves as well as people who are looking out for the broader good

in other words you need to be willing to work with those people like the old guys on the elevator

so I would caution you against shying away from opportunities because you think summer many employees might be different

than you diversity is a strength and I think those of you that I know will enrich any organization you become

member of the a good team player learn from your mistakes and get better over

time and take care of the environment and the communities that you work in
